Kerstmanie
 Eerlijk is eerlijk: eigenlijk heb ik niet zoveel met Kerst. Ik koop zelden een kerstboom, ga niet naar de kerstmis en doe ook niet mee aan alle kerstverlichting die in de buurt waar ik woon haast verplicht lijkt. Eerder dit jaar had ik dan ook het idee opgevat om op vakantie te gaan met Kerst.
Bij het donker en kouder worden van de dagen heb ik parallel daaraan vaak een meer sombere stemming. En aangezien een beetje zon dan altijd goed doet, was ik al voorzichtig een 'halve-net-niet-relatie' subtiel aan het manipuleren om rond Kerst mee te gaan naar Andalusië…
Kerstmanie
Maar op 6 december, wanneer Sinterklaas weer afreist naar Spanje, verdwijnt mijn winterblues als sneeuw voor de zon. Om plaats te maken voor een stemming die het best kan worden omschreven als ‘kerstmanie’.
De trigger voor deze abrupte stemmingswisseling is ieder jaar hetzelfde liedje.
Happy X-mas (War is Over). Het nummer van John Lennon en Yoko Ono veroorzaakt altijd weer een soort kortsluiting in mijn hersenen waarbij in een flits van een seconde een ongekende associatie-explosie plaatsvindt.
'Kerst... kerstboom… feest… bier…wijn… lichtjes… jingle-bells-jingle-bells-jingle-bells… Mariah Carey… gospelsound… vrienden… kennissen… gezellig… zingen… glühwein… Santa-Clause-is-coming-to-town (3x)… dansen… Rudolph-the-rednose-reindeer… Bethlehem… kribbe… Jezus… wereldvrede… God… universum… alles-is-liefde… alles-is-één…'
Nu weet ik dat er mensen voor heel wat minder zware stoornissen gedwongen in therapie zijn gegaan, maar op één of andere manier voelt mijn kerstmanie altijd heel goed. Het zijn van die momenten dat even alles lijkt te kloppen.
Houdbaarheidsdatum
De bron van mijn kersteuforie zit dus in de muziek; in de haast magische werking van de kerstklassiekers. Ronduit fascinerend is dat enkele kerstnummers een onbeperkte houdbaarheidsdatum lijken te hebben. Want niet alleen John Lennon’s Happy X-mas weet mij elk jaar weer in kerststemming te brengen. Een aantal kerstnummers zijn zó goed dat ik direct verkocht ben wanneer ik ze hoor. Ik geloof zelfs dat ze een soort endorfineachtig stofje in het lichaam vrijmaken!
Dit neemt overigens niet weg dat er ook kerstnummers zijn die dermate ver over de houdbaarheidsdatum heen zijn dat ze misselijk maken. Met stip op 1: Last Christmas van Wham en ook het Driving Home For Christmas van Chris Rea zou bij wet verboden moeten worden.
Visioen
Mijn jaarlijkse kerstmanie gaat altijd gepaard met het idee een groot kerstfeest te organiseren: Karel’s-X-masparty. Een feest voor vrienden, kennissen, vage bekenden; eigenlijk zijn ‘alle mensen die een beetje leuk zijn’ welkom.

Karel’s-X-masparty is hét ultieme kerstfeest. Een echt feel-good-feest, een warm bad voor bezoekers, een soort van thuiskomen. Een feest waar wordt teruggeblikt en een feest waar vooruit wordt gekeken. Vanzelfsprekend wordt er volop gedronken, gedanst, geflirt, geknuffeld en zijn de gesprekken ’op niveau’.
Dit alles op een toplocatie met meerdere ruimtes: zo is er Karel’s-X-maspartycafé voor de betere gesprekken. De sfeervolle ambiance van het café kan voor een juiste mate van intimiteit en hopelijk zo voor een echt goed gesprek zorgen. Uiteraard zal er ook een feestzaal zijn waar de echte kerstfeestnummers knallen. Misschien zelfs wel met een optreden van een gospelkoor in de Mariah-Carey-Merry-Christmas-CD-stijl. En ja: er mag gedanst worden! De absolute topper in het concept is Karel’s-X-maskaraokebar, een gezellige ruimte waar je op het podium los kan gaan op de betere kerstnummers (een lichte mate van dronkenschap is hierbij een pré).
Afmeldingen
Ik heb het tot op de dag van vandaag nooit aangedurfd om Karel’s-X-masparty ook echt te organiseren. De reden? Ik ben een beetje bang dat de opkomst uiteindelijk tegenvalt en er bijna niemand komt.
Net zoals ik verwacht dat veel mensen dit een beetje een vreemd stukje zullen vinden, zo zullen er ook veel mensen het concept van de Karel’s-X-masparty niet helemaal begrijpen vrees ik. Zo weet ik dat er niet veel mensen direct enthousiast worden bij de gedachte om Jingle-Bells te karaoken. En veel mensen zijn nu eenmaal gewoon een beetje uitgefeest...
Telefoontjes in de zin van: 'Leuk maar we hebben die dag al afgesproken om bij familie te gourmetten', of kaartjes met 'Goed initiatief, veel plezier, helaas zijn wij dit jaar skiën'; ze hangen in de lucht. Het zijn natuurlijk allemaal smoesjes. En zelfs al vinden deze afmeldingen voor een nog niet bestaand feest alleen in mijn gedachten plaats: het blijft natuurlijk toch een beetje flauw. Want het imaginaire afmeldscenario heeft wel een voedingsbodem die gebaseerd is op praktijkervaringen.
Tot op heden heb ik mijn kerstmanie dus moeten voeden met de juiste muziek, de jaarlijks All You Need Is Love-kerstspecial en een imaginair feest dat uitsluitend in mijn gedachten plaatsvindt. Sommige zaken zijn in fantasie nu eenmaal leuker dan in realiteit. En zo is het bezoeken van een dergelijk briljant kerstconcept waarschijnlijk veel leuker dan de rompslomp van het organiseren ervan. Maar misschien dat het er in 2008 toch maar van moet komen. Gegadigden kunnen zich op dit weblog als potentieel geïnteresseerde aanmelden en wie weet kan het in 2008 dan toch een keer los? Niets is immers zeker. Zelfs dat niet.
Kerstgedachte
Hoewel dit een uitermate sympathiek kerstitem is geworden, ik vraag toch nog even de ruimte voor enkele twijfels rondom de wat zoetsappige kerstboodschap. De 'vrede op aarde-gedachte die elk jaar in de kerstperiode wordt uitgedragen. Los van de vraag of dit haalbaar is, vraag ik me af of vrede op aarde echt wenselijk is.
Om af te sluiten dan ook een licht filosofische bespiegeling in de stijl van Sex and the City-columniste Carrie:
'Vrede op aarde? Willen wij dat eigenlijk wel? Stel dat de hele wereld daadwerkelijk lief tegen elkaar gaat lopen doen, zou het leven dan niet ontzettend saai worden? Zijn alle tegenstellingen en drama’s juist ook niet datgene wat het leven interessant maakt? Zou een film waarin de acteurs vanaf het begin liefdevol elkaars handen vasthouden bezoekers trekken? Ik denk het niet. Ik ben er bang voor dat wij mensen toch ook onze portie ellende en drama nodig hebben. Net zoals Ying bestaat bij de gratie van Yang, zo kan vrede alleen bestaan als er ook oorlog is... Toch?' |
