De Valentijnskaart
Soms duurt het even voor je ze ziet: de kleine wondertjes die ons leven zo interessant maken. Wondertjes die je het gevoel kunnen geven dat iets zo had moeten zijn, of zelfs dat iets of iemand een helpende hand heeft toegestoken.
1992
1992. Ik was vijfentwintig jaar en heerlijk aan het lantefanteren in de nadagen van mijn studententijd. En ik was verliefd. Verliefd op Ellen. Ellen was een verliefdheid van de buitencategorie. Een verliefdheid die vele malen krachtiger was dan ik ooit eerder had ervaren. Een verliefdheid die zich geleidelijk in elke cel van het lichaam leek te nestelen. Het was ook een verliefdheid met hopeloze bijverschijnselen zoals bijna niet kunnen eten wanneer ze in de buurt was, maar bovenal was Ellen een ongewenste verliefdheid.
Ellen speelde in het eerste damesteam van tafeltennisvereniging Cosmos uit Veldhoven en ik was de coach van dat team. Een coach die interesse heeft voor een speelster van een team, dat is altijd ingewikkeld. Bij Ellen lag het nog ingewikkelder. Het leeftijdverschil was royaal te noemen en haar vader was een collega-trainer binnen de vereniging. Iets wat het verhaal nog ingewikkelder kon maken.
Bovenal vond ik het niet gepast om als coach van het team amoureuze gevoelens te ontwikkelen richting een speelster. Als tafeltenniscoach was ik allang op de hoogte van het ski-leraar-effect en ik wist dat mijn rol als coach natuurlijk extra interessant was, maar misbruik maken van de dynamiek achter het ski-leraar-effect botste met mijn vermeende professionaliteit.
Dus ik probeerde zo goed als ik kon de aandacht tussen de speelsters - bijna mathematisch - te verdelen. En ik deed mijn uiterste best om Ellen zo stoïcijns mogelijk te benaderen. Zodat er aan de buitenkant vooral niet zichtbaar zou worden wat er in de binnenkant afspeelde. Gelukkig ben ik daar vrij goed in ;-).
Lange tijd probeerde ik mijn verliefdheid weg te zetten als bevlieging; een tijdelijke staat van verwarring die zou gaan zoals het gekomen was. Maar ik had ongelijk, de verliefdheid bleef...
De blik
Januari 1993. Na een uitwedstrijd zet ik Ellen thuis af bij haar ouders in Veldhoven. Ellen vraagt of ik nog even mee naar binnen ga om wat te drinken... Opvallend.
Haar ouderlijk huis was in die periode een soort asielzoekerscentrum voor het eerste damesteam. Ook ik was daar geregeld te vinden maar dit was eigenlijk altijd binnen de context van het team. Dit was de eerste keer dat Ellen mij alleen binnen vroeg.
Met een biertje op de bank voel ik de blik van Ellen die tegenover mij zit. Ik kan me niet herinneren dat ik eerder een zo lange en indringende blik heb gekregen. Ellen leek haast in een soort trance. Bijna verlegen maak ik een praatje met Ellen’s vader over de wedstrijd van die dag. Ellen zegt zelf vrijwel niets, maar de blik blijft. Zou Ellen verliefd zijn op mij? Ik kan er eigenlijk niets anders van maken…

14 februari 1993, een dag na mijn zesentwintigste verjaardag en het is Valentijnsdag. Een professionele valentijnskaart valt op de deurmat van mijn studentenhuis in Tilburg. Anoniem, geparfumeerd en gezien de vele x-jes duidelijk met liefde en aandacht gemaakt. Kortom: een valentijnskaart zoals het hoort. Die moet van Ellen zijn denk ik meteen. Dat kan gewoon niet missen.
Hoewel de kaart anoniem was, was er een klein ’foutje’ gemaakt. De envelop was namelijk handgeschreven...
Nu had ik een dag eerder een verjaardagskaart gekregen van Ellen en de envelop van die kaart lag nog op tafel. Tijd om de enveloppen te bestuderen: beiden gestempeld in ’s-Hertogenbosch, dat is alvast goed. Nu nog een grondige handschriftanalyse: ook het handschrift komt overeen. Bingo. Eén plus één is immers twee.
De valentijnskaart zet me wel aan het denken. Als er sprake is van een wederzijdse verliefdheid, zou het dan niet ongelofelijk stom zijn daar helemaal niets mee te doen?
En nu?
Ingewikkeld? Gepast of niet? Wenselijk of niet? Met de valentijnskaart als het laatste duwtje moest het dan toch maar gaan gebeuren. Soms zijn er krachten in het leven sterker dan jezelf en dan kun je het beste gewoon met de stroom mee gaan. Tijd voor actie dus!
Aangezien ik vrijwel nooit een moment alleen had met Ellen, besloot ik mijn interesse in de vorm van een brief kenbaar te maken (wat tevens mijn eerste liefdesbrief in 26 jaar was). Leuk verpakt met een slotje en een sleutel geef ik Ellen de brief met het uitdrukkelijk verzoek het slot pas te openen als ze thuis is.
Daar waar ik per ommegaande post iets terug verwachtte bleef het verassend stil. Ik moest het team in het weekend weer coachen bij een thuiswedstrijd en had nog steeds niets van Ellen gehoord. Enigszins met lood in de schoenen stapte ik de zaal in. Met dit onuitgesproken verhaal in de lucht was het wellicht mijn vreemdste dag ooit als coach in de tafeltenniswereld…
Pas een week erop zat er een reactie van Ellen in de brievenbus.
Om een lang verhaal kort te maken: Ellen en ik kregen een relatie en we zijn uiteindelijk bijna tien jaar samen geweest. Op het eerste oog is het geen bijzonder verhaal, ware het niet dat er een groot mysterie rondom het begin onze relatie zweeft: de valentijnskaart. De brief die mij had aangezet tot actie was niet van Ellen! Vandaar dan ook dat Ellen iets meer tijd nodig had om te reageren op mijn brief.
Nu, pas vele jaren later, zie ik eigenlijk pas echt de magie rondom de kaart. Natuurlijk ben ik nog steeds nieuwsgierig naar de afzender en hoe het mogelijk is dat deze nagenoeg hetzelfde handschrift als Ellen had en hoe uitzonderlijk de timing was. Maar het raadsel is tot op vandaag onopgelost gebleven. Misschien moet dit ook maar zo blijven. Dat maakt het verhaal mooier en houdt het ’wonder’ levend.

Een jaar later was ik voor mijn werk verhuisd naar Rijswijk en ontving wederom een verjaardags- / valentijnskaart in dezelfde koeienserie. Leuke grap van Ellen, dacht ik. Niet dus. De mysterieuze kaartenschrijfster liet nog een keer van zich horen. Sommige mysteries moeten eigenlijk altijd een mysterie blijven.
Het ski-leraar-effect.
Het ski-leraar-effect houdt in dat vrouwen op een bepaalde leeftijd per definitie verliefd worden op de skileraar. Het ski-leraar-effect is genetisch bepaald. In de prehistorie koos de vrouw de sterkste Neanderthaler (met de grootste knots) omdat deze het beste kon jagen en het best het gezin kon beschermen. In deze moderne tijden is dit concept achterhaald maar zie je als historische erfenis nog steeds een voorkeur voor de wat gespierdere mannen.
Leidinggevende mannen zijn de betere ‘jagers’ van nu. Vrouwen vallen dan ook vaak voor mannen met een leidinggevende rol, zelfs als deze niets voorstelt. Daarbij heeft de leidinggevende iets onbereikbaars wat hem extra aantrekkelijk maakt!
Het ski-leraar-effect treed uiteraard niet alleen op bij skileraren. Ook bij sporttrainers, reisleiders en ja, ook bij coaches treed het effect in behoorlijk sterke mate op. De basisingrediënten zoals leiding geven, macht en onbereikbaarheid zijn immers identiek.
Toen ik op mijn achttiende voor het eerst als tafeltennistrainer een week op een trainingskamp werkte werd ik verrast door een haast ongekende populariteit. Ik wist toen nog niet van het bestaan van het ski-leraar-effect. De vraag van een collega-trainer: 'Hoeveel meiden zijn er al verliefd op jou?', aan het einde van de eerste dag maakte mij duidelijk dat dit een redelijk normaal fenomeen was. Ik was als 18-jarig broekie nog niet zover dat ik de onderliggende dynamiek compleet doorhad en ik maakte dan ook gretig gebruik (misbruik?) van het ski-leraar-effect door een tikkeltje populistisch op het kamp rond te lopen. Binnen een week na het kamp kwamen er in mijn brievenbus maar liefst drie (liefdes)brieven binnen over hoe leuk ik wel niet was. Goed voor mijn ego, maar in alle eerlijkheid zouden deze waarschijnlijk nooit verstuurd zijn als de afzenders geen slachtoffer waren geworden van het ski-leraar-effect! |
