Dag 23 - Lorne (Australië)
Al weer 3 weken in Australië en ik begin het reisgevoel nu goed te pakken krijgen: Duidelijk meer energie dan normaal en verhoogde adrenalineniveaus. Alle signalen staan op groen. Dit reisgevoel is moeilijk te omschrijven, een soort roes of wellicht nog beter het bereiken van wat men in psychologieboeken ’the flow’ noemt.
Een van de leukst aspecten van het reizen is het onderweg zijn zelf. Of zoals een oude Zen-wijsheid: Het gaat niet om het doel, het gaat om de reis. Het spannende van het onbekende tegemoet treden en niet weten waar je in de avond slapen zal. De uiteindelijke bestemming is vaak de uitkomst van een som van toevalligheden. Een samenspel van externe omstandigheden en interne stemmingen. En vandaag was dat weer niet anders.

Waterval langs waterfall-walkway | Na een ontbijt (met regelmatig papegaaienbezoek op de schouder en 3 kaketoes op tafel) trek ik er in de ochtend op uit met David. Ik had David een dag eerder leren kennen in een hostel en hij intrigeerde mij direct. Hij had een soort rust over zich en een openheid naar anderen toe waar ik jaloers op ben. Ik zou David willen indelen in de categorie ’spirituele reizigers’. Ondanks zijn technische opleiding lijkt deze 32-jarige Engineer uit Engeland met name geïnteresseerd in de minder tastbare zaken in het leven. Ik ga samen met David the waterfall-walkway lopen in de buurt van Lorne, een kustplaatsje aan het begin van de beroemde Great Ocean Road tussen Melbourne en Adelaide. Het wordt een natte tocht wat niet alleen te danken is aan de vele watervallen onderweg maar ook het weer heeft vandaag een aardige serie watervallen in de aanbieding.
Gedurende de lange wandeling is er alle tijd voor wat spirituele lessen van David. Zo heeft David zich behoorlijk in Chinese wijsheden verdiept. Hij heeft zelfs cursussen Tai Chi gegeven in Byron Bay, een populair backpackersplaatsje aan de oostkust van Australië. David gelooft absoluut in het lot en begrippen als Yin Yang en "everything is energy" rollen soepeltjes over de tong. En je bent nooit uitgeleerd dus zijn huidige studieboek gaat over de beloften en geneugten van het Taoïsme. Na waterval nummer drie komt op een gegeven moment het thema van de film The Matrix ter sprake. De centrale vraag hierbij: Wat is realiteit? Wat is echt? David is hier duidelijk verder mee dan ik en komt direct op met het verhaal van Taoist Master Chuang Tzu die een droom had dat hij een vlinder was en nu niet meer zeker weet wat echt en wat een droom is:
"Was I before a man who dreamt about being a butterfly, or am I now a butterfly who dreams about being a man?" Interessante vraag waar ook ik eens een nachtje over moet slapen.
In de late namiddag komen we moe maar voldaan terug in het hostel. We besluiten samen een hapje te gaan eten en gaan om de avond af te sluiten vervolgens nog naar een hotel annex bar voor een paar glazen Guiness bier. Wanneer we rond middernacht terugkomen in het hostel verrast David me met een bedankje: “Thankx for your company today. We had a nice walk, the meal was excellent, I very much enjoyed your company and we have had some interesting conversations”.
Het bedanken voor een fijne dag maalt nog even door mijn hoofd… Heb ik eigenlijk ooit iemand bedankt voor een fijne dag? De ontmoeting met David zal in elk geval blijven hangen en heeft vandaag meer indruk gemaakt dan het natuurschoon langs de waterfall-walkway. Juist dit soort ontmoetingen maken het reizen zo fascinerend. Morgen maar weer eens op weg op zoek naar een volgend bijzonder reismoment.
