Bliepen, metrowijsheden en tyfoon Utor
Dag 1-2 Schiphol (Nederland)
Na een vlotte vlucht van zo'n 11 uur kom ik om 9 uur 's ochtends in Hongkong aan. (3 uur 's nachts Nederlandse tijd) Zoals een echte backpacker betaamt eerst op zoek gegaan naar de juiste bus om naar de YMCA (mijn hotel) te gaan. Dat valt nog niet mee!!!! Tai Kok Tsui? Yau Ma Tei? To Kwa Wan? De namen van de buslijnen doen denken aan de kaart bij de Chinees en buslijnen als Fu Yong Hai en Koe Lo Yuk zouden niet misstaan. Maar welke bus ik moet hebben? Wie het weet mag het zeggen.
De busreis van Hong Kong Airport naar het centrum is indrukwekkend: Mooie bruggen, heuvels en met name het totaalplaatje waarbij je ziet dat je echt in een andere wereld terecht bent gekomen. Eenmaal aangekomen bij de YMCA zie ik de dame bij de receptie fronsen bij het bekijken van mijn Internet-reserveringsdocument.Ik bleek bij de verkeerde YMCA te zitten. De tip van de dame aan de balie was een taxi te nemen en dat leek me een goed plan. Je moet dat backpacken immers ook niet gaan overdrijven.

Hong Kong skyline by night | YMCA nr 2 ligt op een absolute toplokatie met een fantastische view op de skyline van Hongkong-island en de haven. Overdag de stad alvast wat verkend, middagslaapje van een uur of twee, en in het eind van de middag de zonsondergang gaan bekijken. De mooiste die ik ooit gezien heb! De skyline verandert geleidelijk in een zee van lichtjes en met de schepen in de haven gaat het donker een mysterieus decor vormen. Aan de rij met wolkenkrabbers lijkt geen eind aan te komen. Vergeleken met Hongkong is bijvoorbeeld downtown Los Angeles een 'zielig hoopje hoge gebouwen'. Nog een snelle hap in McDonalds en om 10 's avonds uur (16.00 uur Nederlandse tijd) is de slaap niet meer te houden. Welterusten Karel!
Dag 3 - Hongkong
In de ochtend met de Star Ferry van Kowloon naar Hongkong Island (het zakendistrict) Hier een openbaar-vervoer-kaart gescoord op het centraal station. De kaart is een zeer geavanceerd stukje technologie met een hoog Star-Trek-gehalte. Via een bliep-systeem (kaartje op een soort plaat houden en BLIEP) heb je toegang tot alle soorten van openbaar vervoer (Metro, Ferry, Bus, etc.). Op de kaart staat een tegoed wat wordt afgeboekt tijdens het bliepen en wat je kunt opwaarderen. En... het werkt!!!!! Vergeleken met deze technologie is onze chipknip hopeloos verouderd. Zelfs wanneer de kaart midden in de portemonnee zit en je houdt deze boven de bliepplaat wordt er soepeltjes gebliept!

| Met mijn 1e bliep ga ik met het bergtrammetje omhoog naar Victoria Peak. Een berg(je) op Hongkong Island met uitzicht op skyline en haven. Het is mooi weer maar de lucht is wat troebel dus de view valt wat tegen. Later op de dag door-gebliept met de Tung Chung metrolijn naar (je raad het al) Tung Chung. En vanuit daar verder met buslijn 23 (bliep) naar de Giant Buddha die op een bergtop van Lantau-island staat. Een leuk uitje met een boeiende busrit van een uur. Het is verbazingwekkend hoe makkelijk ik mijn weg vind in de wirwar van metrolijnen en bussen. Niets dan complimenten voor mezelf dus. Het weer was veel beter dan voorspeld en ik heb alleen een paraplu bij (dus geen petje of zonnebrandcreme). Wat blijkt: Alle 'locals' gebruiken de paraplu tevens als bescherming voor de zon. Als beginnende backpacker voel ik zoiets dus intuïtief aan en integreer daarmee soepel in het locale gebeuren. Maar je moet niet overdrijven dus s'avonds gegeten bij Delifrance, een 1/2 liter bier in Murphy's (Irish Pub) en een kop koffie bij Starbucks.... 'S-avonds wederom naar de skyline zitten staren en tot slot een leuke film op HBO (Austin Powers, a man of mystery). Topdag!
Dag 4 - Hongkong
Om 5 uur al klaarwakker. Nog altijd een jetlag dus. Eerst een stevig ontbijt om 7 uur en daarna met de metro (Bliep) naar Wong Tai Sin om een tempel te bezichtigen. Foute keus !!!! Bij het verlaten van het metrostation kom ik in een redelijk verpauperde buurt. Vervallen torenflats, het stinkt en door mijn (westerse) ogen is de bevolking een volslagen rariteitenkabinet. De populatie kreupelen, blinden, melaatsen en andersoortige vreemde schepsels is mij te omvangrijk. En als enige westerling lijk ik niet op mijn plaats. Geen tempel dus en snel het metrostation weer in. Helaas is een terugkeer naar Kowloon niet haalbaar doordat het ochtendspits is en een mierenhoop van mensen die kant op gaat voor werk.

Plan B dus. De andere kant op met de metro naar Chai Wan om daar een bus te pakken. De omgeving wordt er niet beter op en de route van de metro geeft af en toe zicht op zeer verpauperde wijken. In de metro is buiten mezelf ook geen westerling te bekennen. In Chai Wan is er in de wirwar van bussen en uitgangen niet uit te komen en ook dit is al geen beste buurt. Het wordt tijd me strategisch terug te trekken met een metro naar Hongkong centraal.
Na ruim 2 uur metro-en in Hong Kong de volgende metrowijsheden:
- Gij zult zwaarmoedig zijn...
Alle locals lijken diep ongelukkig. Lachen is verboden en collectieve depressiviteit een gedragseis. (Dit geld overigens niet voor het zakendistrict en Kowloon)
- Gij zult niet communiceren...
Niemand zegt iets tegen elkaar wat het naargeestige beeld versterkt. Hooguit een mobiele telefoon kan op antwoord rekenen.
- Gij zult nappen...
De hoeveelheid mensen die in de metro (bus, ferry, etc.) slaapt is onvoorstelbaar. Zittend, liggend, staand (!) maakt niet uit.... slapen. Tien van die slapende locals om je heen geeft een redelijk absurdistisch plaatje kan ik je verzekeren.
Na aankomst op centraal een uur of 2 in de stad rondgedoold. De beentjes werden moe en ik besloot een geheel willekeurige boot op de pier van de ferry's naar de Outlying Islands te pakken. (gaan we fijn een stukje varen...) Alweer geen beste keus. De boot gaat naar Silvermine Bay, een dubieuze badplaats in verval. In het Silvermine Beach Hotel kun je overnachten voor 3 tientjes maar het hotel oogt al even deprimerend als zijn omgeving. Snel de 1e ferry terug dus weer wat een aardig wild tochtje werd. Het weer was aan het verslechteren...

Na terugkeer blijf ik in de middag moeizaam ronddolen. Eerst met de bus naar de Stanley Market, een toeristenattractie in het zuiden van HK-Island. Bij aankomst direct een Acda & de Munnik "Is dit het nou, is dit het en we zullen het wel zien"-gevoel. Snel door met de volgende bus naar de drijvende restaurants in Aberdeen. Althans dat was de bedoeling want de bus heeft als eindbestemming de drijvende restaurants maar een eenzame vieze torenflat bij een louche bouwterrein waar meer vieze torenflats gemaakt worden. Uiteindelijk vind ik gelukkig weer een bus naar HK-centraal. Het is een klein wondertje dat ik deze dag met lijf en leden, portemonnee en camera veilig terug kom in het Kowloon.
In Kowloon staat iedereen naar extra nieuwsuitzending te kijken op een groot beeldscherm op de muur van een winkelcentrum. Tyfoon Utor is in de buurt en zou rond 6 uur mogelijk Hong Kong aandoen. Dit zou de zwaarste storm in 20 jaar betekenen en het schijnt daar sowieso flink te kunnen stormen. Het openbaar vervoer ligt al vrij snel stil en veel winkels sluiten alvast de deuren. Dat kan sensationeel worden!
Dag 5 - Hongkong
Helaas (?) heeft tyfoon Utor op het laatste moment een andere route gekozen en moet ik het met een stevig noodweer doen. Het openbare leven in Hong Kong ligt stil. Vrijwel geen mens op straat, het regent als een gekke en bijna alle winkels zijn dicht. Ik weet na lang zoeken toch nog een bus te vinden die rijdt en ga als ramptoerist een spectaculair ritje door Hong Kong maken. De wegen lijken soms haast op watervallen! Het schudden van de bus en het hobbelen over boomstronken geven de rit een hoog pretpark-gevoel.
Om 13.30 uur ga ik alvast met de metro naar Hong Kong Airport. Veel te vroeg (mijn vlucht naar Sydney vertrekt om 23.45 uur), maar in Hong Kong was toch niets meer te doen. Gek genoeg amuseer ik me prima. Cameraploegen zijn aanwezig en maken rapportages over gestrande reizigers door Utor. 2.15 uur 's nachts lokale tijd ....en nog altijd op Hong Kong Airport. De weersomstandigheden zijn weer sterk verslechterd en als je het buiten tekeer hoort gaan is het eerlijk gezegd niet eens zo'n slecht om 'aan de grond' te zitten.
Er heerst hier op het vliegveld inmiddels complete chaos. Er is in het geheel geen informatie. Tenzij je bij de servicedesk met zo'n 200 man in een kringetje gaat staan in de hoop daar wat wijzer te worden. De eerste spookverhalen doen al aardig de ronde. Zo is er een vliegtuig uit Beijing tot vlak voor Hong Kong gekomen maar kon door de weersomstandigheden niet landen, is omgedraaid om terug te vliegen naar Beijing. Is inmiddels de weerssituatie in Beijing sterk verslechterd en de benzinevoorraad bijna op... Ofwel vluchten voor mensen met sterke zenuwen.
Cathay Pacific deelt voedselbonnen uit voor haar passagiers. De rijen om een bon op te halen doen qua lengte denken aan de rijen voor de Russische banken ten tijde van de val van de roebel. Even niet dus. Wat mij het meest verbaasd is de totale wanorde: Groepen mensen die tussen het personeel achter de balie staan ... Vluchten die op het scherm staan als delayed om vervolgens geheel van het bord te verdwijnen en daarna wer terugkomen zonder enige vertrekinfo; Een al geruime tijd 'flippende japanner' begint klappen uit te delen en wordt door de sterke arm wordt opgehaald en afgevoerd. Saai is het dus in elk geval niet en de acteurs in dit real-life theaterstuk maken er een boeiend schouwspel van! Wat te doen? Wakker blijven !!! Een beetje koetjes-en-kalfjes gesprekken met mede 'slachtoffers', af en toe wat lezen (Bridget Jones Diairies), Ilse de Lange op de walkman en er is gratis Internet. Maar vooral wachten... en dan met name wachten op informatie.

16.00 uur. Inmiddels ben ik al 26 uur op Hong Kong Airport.
Na 2 uur 'qeuen' heb ik net een nieuwe boardingpass gekregen van Joyce op de desk van Cathay Pacific. Vannacht is geen enkele vlucht geland of vertrokken en de chaos duurt onverminderd voort. De desk van China Airlines biedt het meeste spektakel en lijkt op een beursvloer waar een aandelencrash plaatsvindt. Mensen lopen met boardingpassen te zwaaien als er weer 'geboden' kan worden op enkele stoelen en er wordt geroepen, getrokken en geduwd. Alle automatische hulpmiddelen zijn inmiddels verlaten. Medewerkers van China Airlines bieden al roepend plaatsen aan voor vluchten en lopen met papieren A4-tjes (!) rond met de info over de te kiezen gate. Dit op een vliegveld velen malen groter dan Schiphol (meer dan 80 gates!) waarvan zeker de helft van de aanwezigen ligt te slapen. De pers is aanwezig om alles voor het nageslacht vast te leggen. De rijen voor de desk Van Cathay zijn ook haast niet meer te overzien. Het meest absurde is dat niemand iets weet. Inclusief het voltallige personeel van Cathay. Ik had me vanochtend (2 uurtjes op de grond geslapen, papieren op de borst, portemonnee in de onderbroek) aangesloten bij een groepje Ozzi's om een gezamenlijk poging te doen enige info te krijgen over de Australië-vluchten. Later onder het motto "ieder voor zich en god voor ons allen" voor 7e keer de rij ingegaan met een voorlopige boarding pass als resultaat. De vlucht CX111 staat overigens maar korte tijd op de borden en verdwijnt na enige tijd alweer alsof deze nooit bestaan heeft. Tijd om nog een keertje achter aan te sluiten???
Nawoord Veldhoven 2006
Na een totale wachttijd op het vliegveld van zo'n 30 uur eindelijk naar Sydney. Ruim 30 uur wachten op een vliegveld is op het 1e gezicht geen leuke ervaring. Toch kijk ik met een glimlach terug op deze 30 uur en dit is denk ik direct een stukje essentie van het reizen. Achteraf leuk is ook leuk. Het meemaken van de chaos op HongKong Airport was een boeiende ervaring die ik niet had willen missen! |
